How to read BenQ projector model names: first letter for class M, S, T, L, W, X, G, V, second letter for resolution S, X, W, H, U, K, series number, short throw ST and UST, the i suffix with Android TV, the two naming systems W and HT, and the light source lamp, BlueCore laser or 4LED, explained on the TK700STi.

How to read model names
TK700STi
First letter · class of unit
M lamp-based business (MS536, MX611, MW727, MH741) · S lamp-based installation (SH753, SH940) · T home entertainment (TH685, TK850i) · W home cinema (W1070, W2700) · L lamp-free (LU930, LK935) · X gaming (X1300i, X3000i) · GP, GS, GV portable · V ultra-short-throw Laser TV (V7050i). Every one of them uses a single-chip DLP.
4K
Second letter · resolution
SSVGA 800×600 · XXGA 1024×768 · WWXGA 1280×800 · HFull HD 1920×1080 · UWUXGA 1920×1200 · K4K UHD 3840×2160. The scheme holds across the whole range: MS536, MX611, MW727, MH741, LU930, LK935.
The number · rank in the series, not lumens
The key difference from NEC and Panasonic: with BenQ the number does not encode brightness. It marks rank within a series — a higher number means better optics, wider zoom and a higher price. The W2700 puts out 2000 lm, while the senior W5700 gives 1800 lm: you pay for the lens and the shift, not for light. Take brightness from the spec sheet only.
Throw type · ST and UST
ST — short throw: the same image size from a noticeably shorter distance than a standard model (W1210ST, TH671ST, MW632ST, LK936ST). UST — ultra short throw: the unit sits right below the screen (MW855UST, LH856UST). No such letters — standard optics.
Lower-case i at the end · Android TV
i means a factory BenQ certified Android TV dongle is included (QS01 or QS02): Google Play apps and streaming straight from the projector, with no PC and no separate box. That is how TK700STi, TK850i, W1800i, W2710i, X3000i and TH685i are marked. The same model without i ships without the dongle; the rest of the hardware is identical.
Two naming systems · W and HT
BenQ sells its home cinema line under two names: W for Europe and Asia, HT for the USA. It is the same machine: W2700 = HT3550, W5700 = HT5550. So search for reviews and lamps for a US HT model under the European W index as well. The mirroring is partial — some models exist in one system only.
Light source · the main trap
Most M, S, TH, TK and W models are lamp-based. An L at the front only means no lamp, not necessarily a laser: LU930, LK935 and LH650 are BlueCore laser rated at 20,000 hours with IP5X dust protection, while the LH730 is 4LED rated up to 30,000 hours in eco mode. The portable GP, GV and GS units are LED too. Check the source model by model.
