How to read Dell projector model names: the leading letter M, S or P, the class number 1000, 4000 or 7000, the resolution letter S, X, W, WX, H, WU or Q, the letter L for lamp-free, the interactive tails i, P, T and N, and the HD trap, explained on the S518WL.

How to read model names
S518WLi
Leading letter · class
No letter — classic business models (1610HD, 4310WX, 7609WU) · M pocket · S short throw · P senior line. Dell calls its most powerful units Advanced: 7760, P519HL, S718QL.
The number · chassis class
The first digit marks class, not brightness: 1000 portable (1410X) · 4000 business (4310WX → 3,500 lm) · 7000 large venue (7760 → 5,400 lm). Check the exact figure in the spec sheet.
Resolution
S — SVGA 800×600 · X — XGA 1024×768 · W/WX — WXGA 1280×800 · H — Full HD 1920×1080 · WU — WUXGA 1920×1200 · Q — 4K UHD. Examples: 1210S, 1410X, P519HL, S718QL.
Light source
L at the end — lamp-free, rated 20,000 hours. In the pocket M line it means LED (M318WL → 500 lm); in S and P it means laser (S518WL → 3,200 lm, P519HL → 4,000 lm). The 7760 is laser too, despite having no letter. Everything else runs a UHP lamp.
Suffix at the end
i — interactive with a pen (S320Wi, S500Wi). Newer models split the input method apart: P — pen (S560P), T — finger touch (S560T). N — network version (S510N).
The «HD» trap
HD only means the unit accepts a 720p signal, not that it has a 1080p chip. Per the Dell brochure: 1210S SVGA · 1410X XGA · 1510X XGA · 1610HD — WXGA 1280×800. True Full HD was spelled out (7700 FullHD) or marked with H.
S518WLi = Dell · short throw · WXGA · laser, 20,000 hours · interactive version

Dell (founded 1984, USA) — a computer company, not an optics one: a projector here belongs to the IT estate like a PC monitor — network control, one standard fleet, long support. In 2017 the 7760 at $3,099 became the cheapest 1080p rated for 20,000 hours. The brand has left the market.
