First two letters · light source

MC — lamp: 2,000 hours, 4,000 in eco, then you buy a new one and fit it yourself. MP — laser: 20,000 hours, nothing to replace. MC costs less and renders colour better; MP costs more but suits constant use.

Letter after the hyphen · where it sits

A and T hang above the screen — the image comes from up close, so nobody casts a shadow (MC-AW3506). E — desktop projectors (MC-EX3551). B and C — the lightest (MC-BW301). J — compact laser units (MP-JW4001). No letter means a plain desktop model or a large one for a hall.

Next letter · resolution

X — XGA 1024×768, 4:3. W and WX — WXGA 1280×800, widescreen 16:10. U and WU — WUXGA 1920×1200.

The number · chassis size

The first digit is the size of the projector. 3000–4000 — portable. 5000 — fixed units for a mid-size hall (MP-WU5603 → 6,000 lm). 8000–9000 — large, the lens comes off so you can fit one to suit your room (MC-WU8701W → 7,000 lm). Brightness is not encoded here.

Final letter · body

W — white body, B — black; the internals are identical: MC-WU8701W and MC-WU8701B both give 7,000 lm. The trap: in MC-AW3506W the letter W appears twice. The first, after A, is the WXGA resolution. The second, at the end, is the colour.

Maxell (founded 1960, Osaka) — a leader in batteries and discs: the name comes from MAXimum capacity dry cELL, and in the 1970s and 80s it held the world cassette market. In 2013 it took over Hitachi's projector business, plant and engineers included. The MP lasers are the peak of that school.
