How to read Mitsubishi projector model names: the LVP prefix, the first letter for resolution S, X, W, F, U, the second letter for the imaging chip D for DLP and L for 3LCD, the series number, the U, E, -G, ST and BL tails, the separate HC, EX, EW and GX families, and the VLT lamp code, explained on the LVP-XD8100U.

How to read model names
LVP-XD8100U
The LVP prefix
LVP is the factory prefix on the label and in the manual. Sellers normally drop it: LVP-XD8100U and XD8100U are the same machine. When hunting for a model or a lamp, try both spellings.
XD
First letter · resolution
SSVGA 800×600 · XXGA 1024×768 · WWXGA 1280×800 · FFull HD 1920×1080 · UWUXGA 1920×1200. Examples: SL4U, XD280U, WD620U, FD630U, UD8400U.
Second letter · imaging chip
DDLP, a Texas Instruments mirror chip: XD280U, WD620U, FD630U. L3LCD, three liquid-crystal panels: SL4U, XL7000U, UL7400U. Models sharing a number can sit on different chips.
The number · class, not lumens
The number encodes the chassis class, not brightness. Two or three digits (XD280U, FD630U) mean a portable with a fixed lens. The 3000 and 8000 series (XD3500U, XD8100U, UD8400U) are installation units with interchangeable optics and lens shift. Take lumens from the spec sheet only.
Tail at the end · market and variant
U — USA and Canada, E — Europe: identical hardware for a different market. -G is a variant of the same model: XD280U and XD280U-G share a lamp and brightness. ST — short throw (EW230U-ST). BL is not a different model: HC5000 and HC5000BL are one machine.
Families outside the scheme
HCHome Cinema: HC3800, HC4000, HC7800D. EX and EW — Entry. GX — Asian markets (GX-540, GX-660).
Lamp code · VLT-…LP
Every Mitsubishi projector is lamp-based; the brand never built a lamp-free series. The lamp code reads VLT-model-nameLPVLT-XD280LP for the XD280U, VLT-HC3800LP for the HC3800. One lamp often covers several models: VLT-XD280LP fits the XD250U too. Rated 3,000 hours, up to 5,000–6,000 in eco.

Mitsubishi Electric (founded 1921, Tokyo) — a rare case: the brand built both DLP and 3LCD with equal confidence. In October 2013 it shut the projector division down with some 40 models in the range. No new units exist — only used ones; VLT lamps are still sold.
