How to choose a projector
You are choosing a professional projector at 10–15% of its original price. Below are four things worth knowing before you buy. If you have no time to read, look at the first point only: brightness decides almost everything.
Brightness is the main parameter
The more light there is in the room, the more lumens you need. Brightness decides whether the picture stays visible with the curtains open — everything else is secondary. It is measured to the ANSIAn international standard for measuring brightness: a meter takes nine readings across the screen area and returns the average. Only figures like these can be compared with each other. protocol: a meter takes nine readings across the screen area and returns the average. The number on a cheap projector’s box is obtained differently and compares to nothing.
Four ranges — four rooms
Up to 2,500 — a dark room with the curtains drawn. 2,600–3,500 — a living room with a lamp on. 3,600–4,900 — a bright room with the curtains open. Over 5,000 — a large hall and outdoor screenings. Pick your room and the catalogue will leave only what fits.
Resolution — match it to the task
For gaming take Full HD1920×1080 pixels — the same format as your TV and Blu-ray. or WUXGA1920×1200 pixels. The same Full HD, just a slightly taller frame.. For films and YouTube WXGA1280×800 pixels. Enough for films and YouTube on screens up to 120″. is enough. For slides and presentations — XGA1024×768 pixels, 4:3 format. For slides, tables and documents.. On a home screen from two or three metres, the difference between WUXGA and 4K3840×2160 pixels — four times as many as Full HD. is far smaller than the difference in price.
Lamp or laser
A lamp gives more natural colour because it emits a continuous spectrumA lamp emits every colour in sequence, like daylight. That is why skin tones and greens look more natural.. After 5,000–10,000 hours it is replaced: $30–100 and a few minutes of work. A laser is never replaced at all — in Japanese models the service life reaches 40,000 hours with no maintenance. Both are good; the difference is what matters more to you.
This is an investment, not an expense
A Chinese projector bought for 20,000 ₴ is worth 2,000 ₴ a few years later, or will not sell at all: there are no updates and the service life is a couple of thousand hours. A professional Sony, Epson, Panasonic or NEC bought for 20,000 ₴ will still be worth 20,000 ₴: a brand and a well-built machine are taken immediately. You use the equipment for years and it does not lose value.
